What does Food Students offer?
You can either use Food Students as a source of information or visit it together with your pupils. The material is aimed particularly at the 12- to 16-year-olds and is arranged in three sections with information on foodstuffs and their production:

| |
Emailing real experts: questions which arise during lessons can be passed on to experts directly by email. |
| |
The Encyclopedia: This gives detailed and easily understandable explanations of specialised terms such as gene, breeding, allergy or tapeworm, together with references to topical subjects such as the Novel Food Directive. |
In addition to all these is the Teacher’s Section. This provides ideas and materials for use in class.
Particular advantages of the Teacher’s Section
In the Teacher’s Notes you will find suggestions for the use of Food Students in the classroom. Differences in school curricula and the structure of individual lessons will certainly open up full scope for highly individual use of this page. The enyclopedia and the expert contacts can help enrich lessons on many topics, whilst the Quiz will come in useful as a motivating element in lessons on food production, nutrition, and plant breeding. Since the page is available in various languages, it will also be suitable for bilingual lessons.
The Teacher’s Notes are accompanied by a background text, teaching aids, and tips for extended researches.
The Topics:
Carbohydrate-rich staple foods, with special focus on the potato
This centres round the eventful history of a number of crop plants, especially the potato. It traces the gradual spread of the potato, the modifications it underwent as a result of breeding, its importance for human beings as a source of starch (dealt with in greater detail), and the struggle against its natural enemies in the field.
